Real Self vs Ideal Self

Be who you want to be, but stay honest with yourself

To start here is a definition: the “ideal self” is the person you would like to become. With objectives that you would like to achieve, which are sometimes achievable and sometime   unattainable. This is an idealized representation of what a person would like to become. For this reason, the person is inspired by his education, by the people she/he admires the most.

Conversely,  the “real self” is an appreciation of what an individual actually has the feeling of being, with her/his own qualities and defects.

Your “ideal self” is the person you would like to be with all your goals, values, inspirations…

When you want to achieve your “ideal self”, there are often several questions that arise. Did I accomplish everything I wanted? Do I really know myself?

In order to reach this “ideal self”, there are several exercises that can be done:

  • Try to determine your real values in order to really align yourself with them.
  • Determine the objectives and missions you want to achieve.
  • Establish a plan to achieve your goals.
  • Most importantly, be as honest as you can with yourself.

However, it is also very important that your “ideal self” is well targeted so as to correspond to your inner values, so you do not need to wear a mask on a daily basis. In fact, by deciding to change your objectives, your lifestyle, you will probably change your “real self” a bit. In order to remain yourself, you must try to control your “ideal self” in order to achieve your new objectives while still remaining yourself.
